Amateur Athletic International Competition 2009
On Wednesday 14th October 2009, 16 Year 7 students (8 girls and 8 boys) took part in this years Amateur Athletic International competition which was held at the Lee Valley Indoor athletics Centre in Picketts Lock.
The event was in the form of a continuous relay between various cities including Madrid, Valencia, Toronto, Manchester and West Virginia in the US. The aim was to break the great Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie’s marathon world record of 2 hours 3 minutes and 59 seconds.
Beal students were part of the two 32 strong London teams which included pupils from three other schools. Each student had to run 200metres of the track before passing the baton to their team mate. As a team, they had to complete 104 laps of the track which is the equivalent of running the marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42km) within the world record time.
On the day, the girls from Beal were in the green team whilst the boys made up the orange team. Both teams started out strongly and for a while it was extremely close. However, as the race progressed the orange team began to take the lead and by the latter stages this lead had been extended to over one lap.
The event was being filmed by a Spanish TV company which was able to keep London updated on how the other cities were doing. The good news was that London led all the way from start to finish and even better still the orange team broke the marathon world record by 22 seconds!!! The green team also did incredibly well by finishing second behind the orange team.
